What is meant by “classroom”?
A “classroom” can be any space in which mathematics is taught and learned. It does not have to be a building.
Do we have to complete all the categories on the data submission form?
No. Each class need only collect the data which is meaningful and interesting for them. For example, younger children may have a limited understanding of formal units of measurement and so Q6 on measuring the perimeter in metres could be omitted. Similar comments apply to Q8 which asks for the area to the nearest square metre.
If there is no response for a particular question, then leave the space blank.
Do we have to conduct our activities during National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2011 (29 August – 4 September 2011)?
No. We know that time constraints can be difficult! You are welcome to run the activities earlier or later than this. However, only schools which complete the online data submission form before 10pm (AEST) on Sunday 4 September will be eligible for the prize draw.
Can individual classes enter their own data online?
Yes.
Other teachers at school are also interested in being involved. Do they need to register?
This is entirely up to the teachers and schools involved. Everyone who completes a registration form with a valid e-mail address will receive e-mail updates and an invitation to provide feedback to us at the conclusion of the project.
Many schools choose to have a single coordinator who receives and distributes information, but each school is welcome to register as many teachers as they wish.
Entry into the prize draw is limited to one entry per school per activity. For example, a school that registers and submits data for Reach for the Stars, registers to take part in Read for Australia and registers to take part in Digital Stories will have three entries into the prize draw.
Do we have to be a formal pre-school or school to be involved?
No. If this activity is useful to you then you are welcome to be involved and to share your data. Reach for the Stars regularly has participants who are based in kindergartens, child care centres, after-school care or tuition centres and home-schooling contexts.
